Dentures are a popular solution for individuals who have lost teeth due to various reasons, such as decay, injury, or illness. At our well-established dental practice, we bring years of experience and expertise in providing high-quality dentures that restore functionality and aesthetics to your smile.

This article aims to provide comprehensive information about dentures, including the costs involved and a comparison with dental implants.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are custom-made to fit your mouth and provide a natural-looking smile. Dentures can be categorised into two main types:

  1. **Complete Dentures**

Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing in either the upper or lower jaw. They rest directly on the gums and are typically made of acrylic resin. Complete dentures can be either “conventional” or “immediate.” Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking a few months healing prior to construction. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed, although they may require adjustments during the healing process. These will also need to be remade a few months later when healing has occurred.

  1. **Partial Dentures**

Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-coloured plastic base, which is often connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place. Partial dentures fill in the gaps left by missing teeth, preventing the remaining teeth from shifting position. There are two main types of partial dentures:

Acrylic Partial Dentures: These are made completely of acrylic and are important in the immediate replacement of teeth however are not ideal for gum or tooth health over the long term.

Cobalt Chromium Dentures: These have a metal substructure that is made to fit the remaining teeth and is far superior to an acrylic denture both in terms on tooth and gum health and function.

Costs of Dentures in Ireland

The cost of dentures can vary widely based on several factors, including the type of denture, the materials used, and the complexity of the case. We also have a specialist prosthodontist working at the practice allowing the most advanced restorations possible. Here’s a general breakdown of what you might expect:

  1. **Complete Dentures**

Immediate dentures typically cost €1,000 and definitive dentures up to €1,800

  1. **Partial Dentures**

There is a wide cost range here from €450 for an immediate partial acrylic denture to €1,800 for a definitive Cobalt Chromium metal based denture.

Additional Costs

– **Extractions**: The cost of tooth extraction before fitting dentures ranges from €200 and €400 per tooth.

– **Denture Adjustments and Relines**: Over time, dentures may need adjustments or relines to maintain a proper fit, which can cost between €200 and €400

– **Denture Repairs**: Minor repairs can cost between €150 and €300, while more extensive repairs may cost more.

Dentures vs. Dental Implants

While dentures are a popular choice for tooth replacement, dental implants are another option that many patients consider. Here’s a comparison to help you understand the differences between dentures and implants.

**Durability and Longevity**

– **Dentures**: With proper care, dentures can last between 5 and 10 years. They may require adjustments, relines, or replacements due to wear and changes in the mouth.

– **Implants**: Dental implants are designed to be a long-term solution, often lasting a lifetime with proper care. They are more durable than dentures because they are anchored into the jawbone. Dental implants do not work for everyone and it is essential there is an excellent home care regime and regular dental appointments are maintained. Also the restorations on the implants may need to be remade on occasion.

Dentures can be made fit on implants and this achieves much better retention. These dentures are still subject to a relatively high maintenance need. On the other hand “fixed” teeth on implants, with good care, require less maintenance and give better longevity.

**Comfort and Convenience**

– **Dentures**: Some patients may experience discomfort or difficulty while eating and speaking, especially with lower dentures. They also require daily removal and cleaning.

– **Implants**: Implants feel and function more like natural teeth, providing greater comfort and stability. The fixed restorations do not need to be removed for cleaning and are maintained through regular brushing and flossing.

**Aesthetics**

– **Dentures**: Modern dentures can look very natural. Sometimes they may be a superior option to a fixed restoration on implants from an aesthetic perspective as they replace the missing teeth, gum and bone.

– **Implants**: Implants provide a highly natural look and feel. Removable restorations on implants can give the most advantages where the jaw bone is badly resorbed away. With fixed restorations the crowns or bridges attached to implants are custom-made to match the colour and shape of your existing teeth.

**Cost**

– **Dentures**: Generally, dentures are more affordable than implants. However, the need for periodic adjustments and replacements can add to the overall cost over time.

– **Implants**: The initial cost of dental implants is higher, typically costing €2,800 per implant and tooth. Full-mouth restoration with implants can cost €15,000 to €30,000 or more. Despite the higher upfront cost, implants may be more cost-effective in the long run due to their durability and reduced maintenance needs. The increased quality of life implants can provide is immense.

**Bone Health**

– **Dentures**: Dentures do not prevent bone loss in the jaw, which can occur when teeth are missing. Over time, this bone loss can affect the fit of dentures.

– **Implants**: Implants can prevent bone loss somewhat like like natural teeth, helping to prevent bone loss and maintain the structure of the face.
